Bounces, unsubscribes and opt-outs
What FollowThroo does when an email bounces or someone unsubscribes, which channels it stops, and how the suppression list works.
Last updated
FollowThroo stops contacting people who ask it to, and stops emailing addresses that don't work. An unsubscribe stops every channel; a bounce stops email to that address. Both are recorded on the lead's timeline.
Unsubscribes
- Every campaign email carries an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Gmail and Yahoo can also show their own Unsubscribe button beside the sender. Emails sent through Zoho Mail have the link only.
- The link opens a page that asks the person to confirm, so a security scanner that opens every link can't unsubscribe anyone by accident.
- Replying with just "stop" or "unsubscribe" counts the same.
- Once someone unsubscribes, their address goes on the suppression list and they are marked as opted out. No campaign emails them, messages them on WhatsApp or contacts them on LinkedIn again, and adding them to a new campaign leaves them out.
- Receipts and other system emails from FollowThroo don't carry the link: only campaign emails do.
Bounces
- When a mail server sends back a notice that an email couldn't be delivered, FollowThroo marks that email Bounced in Outbox and puts the address on the suppression list.
- Later emails to that address are skipped, in every campaign. The lead's LinkedIn and WhatsApp steps still go ahead.
- A delay notice, where the server says it will keep trying, isn't a bounce.
- A bounce on the automatic reply to new leads suppresses the address too.
The suppression list
The suppression list is the record of addresses FollowThroo will not email in your workspace, with the reason: an unsubscribe or a bounce. Every campaign email is checked against it before it goes.
Credits are only kept for messages that actually went out, so an email skipped because its address is suppressed costs nothing. See How credits work.
